On that day in 1970, many speakers told the crowds that the world was in terrible condition. Firstly, about one out of four people did not have enough food. In some parts of the world, people did not live past the age of 45. The environment was also in bad shape. The world\u2019s great rivers\u2014such as the Tiber and the Mississippi\u2014were full of trash, and the water was undrinkable. <\/span><b>Big cities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were covered in <\/span><b>smog<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and leaded gasoline <\/span><b>polluted the air<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The speakers thought that these problems would only get worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. Happily, many of these problems did not get as bad as experts feared. In fact, according to Mann, there has been \u201ca huge surge in human well-being\u201d in the last 50 years. Most people around the world are enjoying better health and more nutritious food. Even though there are three billion more people than in 1970, 90 percent of us have enough food today\u2014up from about 75 percent in 1970. In addition, average life expectancy has increased by more than 13 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D. Some of the worst environmental problems have improved as well. <\/span><b>Water pollution has decreased<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 1970. Smog is less of a problem in many cities. And <\/span><b>no country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world makes leaded gasoline anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E. These improvements have not helped everyone, however. Millions still live in poverty. Millions more live in places that are becoming more polluted, not less. According to Mann, though, \u201cThe factory worker in Pennsylvania and the farmer in Pakistan may be struggling &#8230; yet they are, by the standards of the past, wealthy and healthy.\u201d Billions of people\u2019s lives are better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F. The first Earth Day started a trend toward helping the Earth. Why? Mann believes it showed us that we can deal with environmental challenges. Today, we face a <\/span><b>different set of problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than we did <\/span><b>50 years ago<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014such as <\/span><b>climate change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
