I’m going to talk about the day our greatest president Ho Chi Minh read the proclamation of independence of Vietnam, which is definitely one of the most significant historical events in our country. It took place on September 2nd 1945 at Ba Dinh square. I didn’t witness everything directly but based on some videos and pictures that I’ve seen, thousands of people flocked to the square that day in joy and excitement to celebrate a huge milestone in the history of our country. It was also an event that attracted lots of media attention, both domestically and internationally. In the morning of that day, on behalf of the interim government, our dearly beloved uncle Ho announced this declaration founding the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, which is also the first Democratic state in Southeast Asia. There are several reasons why this event is of paramount importance in Vietnam’s history. For one thing, it marked a crucial chapter in our long fight against foreign intruders. After almost 100 years being under the rule of the French colonists and the Japanese fascists, we were finally able to fight them off and gain our peace and independence. For another, it laid the groundwork for our later victory against the Americans in 1975 by giving a strong mental boost to the people in the South so that they could keep on fighting until we liberated and reunified the whole nation. As a matter of fact, some footage of this event is still broadcast every year on TV to remind us of a historic day that no Vietnamese people will ever forget. That said, I hope that we will never have to go through another tragic war like that ever again.
